2 black stripes – sanseru

Sanseru is an advanced kata in Goju-Ryu Karate, rooted in the Chinese martial arts tradition. The name “Sanseru” translates to “36,” symbolising concepts associated with numerology in Okinawan martial culture or the number of techniques originally taught in the kata. Sanseru is a close-range combat kata, incorporating a blend of strong, grounded stances, open-hand techniques, and circular movements. It emphasises control over an opponent, teaching practitioners effective techniques for grappling, blocking, and counter-attacking.

Key Components of Sanseru

  • Movements: Sanseru includes 36 primary movements, characterised by powerful, controlled strikes, blocks, and defensive manoeuvres. Movements are tight and precise, training practitioners to stay grounded and centred.
  • Techniques: Sanseru features a combination of linear and circular techniques suited for close-quarters engagement:
    • Nukite (Spear-Hand Thrust): A focused thrust with fingertips aimed at vital points.
    • Kake Uke (Hooking Block): A circular, hooking block to deflect or control an opponent’s arm.
    • Shuto Uchi (Knife-Hand Strike): An open-hand strike for targeted areas like the neck or temples.
    • Mawashi Uke (Roundhouse Block): A signature Goju-Ryu circular block, incorporating both arms to redirect and control attacks.
    • Elbow and Knee Strikes: Various elbow and knee techniques for powerful, close-range attacks.
    • Double-Arm Techniques: Some blocks and strikes use both arms simultaneously, emphasising control and strong defensive posture.
  • Stances: Primarily uses Sanchin Dachi (Hourglass Stance) for grounding and Shiko Dachi (Square Stance) for stability, allowing smooth transitions between offence and defence.

Pattern and Rhythm

  • The pattern of Sanseru involves forward, backward, and lateral movements, demonstrating adaptability in all directions. Movements emphasise balance and control, with a blend of strong, rooted techniques and fluid, circular motions.
  • The rhythm of the kata is steady and deliberate, with periodic explosive strikes and controlled transitions, allowing for both power and precision.

Purpose
Sanseru teaches practitioners to effectively manage close-range confrontations, emphasising control over an opponent through joint manipulation, deflection, and precise striking. The kata enhances physical strength, balance, and endurance, particularly through low stances and repetitive circular blocks. Sanseru embodies Goju-Ryu’s core philosophy of “hard and soft,” combining forceful strikes with adaptable, circular defence. This kata prepares practitioners for advanced applications in both offence and defence, reinforcing the importance of balance, timing, and body control in Goju-Ryu.
